I am a devoted reader of Daryl Banner's mm romances. What Brazen Boys series hinted at comes to fruition in Getting Lucky. Banner has played with the dominance and submission themes, yet now he goes full out with this book. Banner managed to examine the topic of the power of youth over older gay men. James is in his early thirties, but Lucky is only nineteen.Youth is the idolatry of gay culture, yet Banner avoids the cliches so often attached to this idolatry. It was painful to read because in my sixty years I have tried to help homeless youth. It was a creed for my father that every teenager deserved a safe place to sleep and food to eat. Getting Lucky plays so close to themes that I grew up holding dear passed to me by my parents (I recall many times when one of the three of us would bring home some friend who found themselves kicked out of their house) that it brought back many happy and painful memories.Getting Lucky is a redemptive story. If examined as literature one finds a selfless gay man doing his best to rescue an angry, hurt teenager living on the streets, and holding his desires in check for the sake of the teen. That is selfless love. Unlike how such situations often play out in life, Lucky comes to see that James is devoted to his welfare and, this is where the eroticism enters) will do anything to make Lucky happy.I loved this book and encourage Banner to examine this theme more in future books.All in all, an excellent read that manages to keep the erotic factor at pulse-pounding eventually giving a powerful payoff. As a fan of Darryl's books, I have to say that this one was a tough one to read. It was heart wrenching, heartbreaking and lovely all at the same time. I know that sounds like an oxymoron but it is the best way I can describe all the feels that you get while reading this book. As a mother myself I cannot imagine any parent letting their child run away while still grieving the loss of their mother and to be so selfish to replace her immediately with a female so self indulgent as the infamous "countess c***". No wonder the boy ran away. HIs father was cold and unfeeling and literally sent his son onto the streets with nothing but the clothes on his back. It was so unbelievably sad and scary for the young man and yet our hero, James, saw something in him and had to rescue him. It was serendipity when the two of them collided literally and James was immediately smitten. The story that unfolds from there is really amazing and heartbreaking at the same time. Two very lost souls found each other at that moment and began a journey of redemption for them both. There were times while reading this book that I had to put it down and walk away for a spell because it was so hurtful to read yet I had to keep reading it to find out how it ended. Perhaps because I am a mother myself that is why it touched me so and made it so difficult to read because all I could think about was "how could any parent be so cruel to their own child?" It was so well written and very well done. Good job Darryl. You wrote an excellent book.
